Hello everyone! I'm Kaley Henderson and I will be serving as your 2021-2022 Orange County FFA Secretary!
I'm a sophomore at West Orange High School and proud member and Treasurer of WOHS FFA. Throughout my 5 years in FFA I have participated in a total of 9 CDE's and LDE's so far. I also have ongoing SAE projects including plant, veggie, and fruit production using multiple methods like hydroponics and aquaponics. Out of all the CDE's I've participated in I would say my favorite is Land Judging since it was my first ever CDE back in 6th grade. I love the observation and math elements of the contest! I also love Food Science and Floriculture since my teams and I won 1st in State during my time at Sunridge Middle. I am so ecstatic to be serving Orange County this year and I cannot wait for this amazing year-to-come!
Plants
One of my favorite parts of agriculture is all of the plants! I'm always identifying and pointing out plant and tree species to my friends and family since I love sharing my knowledge of plants and teaching others about them!
One of my SAE's this year is propagating and growing succulents. I'm currently growing 10+ variants of succulents as well as multiple varieties of snake plants in our ag yard's greenhouse.
Outside the greenhouse, I'm a huge plant mom at home and have a variety of succulents and ornamental plants including White Annes, Bromeliads, Begonias, and Ivies.
Volleyball
When I'm not at the ag yard you can find me at the volleyball courts!
I've been playing volleyball for 8 years and I'm currently playing at Five Stars Volleyball Club. I've had the honor of being the captain for my club team this past season and it has taught me such great leadership skills that I am excited to bring to Orange County FFA!
I also play Varsity for both indoor and beach volleyball at West Orange. Overall, I love the team dynamic of volleyball, whether its 2v2 Beach Volleyball or traditional 6v6 Indoor Volleyball, I'm always learning how to be a better teammate and a better communicator!
Urban Agriculture
My absolute favorite aspect of agriculture, and the part I'm most passionate about, is Urban Agriculture!
I've had multiple urban agriculture systems throughout the years including an at-home aquaponics garden and a hydroponics garden that I currently maintain at Sunridge Middle.
At Sunridge, I use my hydroponics garden to teach workshops relating to urban agriculture. It is crucial that today's youth is introduced to this method of growing produce. This is because it might become more popular as much of our farmlands are getting lost due to developments and we constantly need more ways to grow more food on less land!
